makes me smile

A few things that have made me smile this week:

1. The snap above. Where's Fia gone??

2. These little sheepie boots. Too cute. The weather's warming up but a newborn always needs snuggly things eh? That's how I justify them anyway.

3. My little sous-chef/cupcake devourer.

An electric beater is just a little bit too much fun! As is giving gingerbread men currant 'gloves', 'hats' and 'shoes'. They might get cold otherwise. Oh, and they need 'tummy buttons' too. :)

We adapted a ginger loaf recipe from Taste Magazine. A few variations (according to what was in the pantry) and we had gingerbread cupcakes. Actually not bad. Grab our version of the recipe here. (Link coming soon...)

4. Ok, this one made me more than smile...

Dear little Coolpix, you have served me well but you are no longer needed...

...eeeeeeek!

Yes, my hot husband may have agreed with me that a new camera is a very worthy investment before the birth of a new baby. :) Our first SLR and wow doesn't cover it. I've stuck a bunch of the first experimental photos in this post. However, there are still a few here that were snapped by old Coolie-Coolpix. I'll send a free coffee to the first to guess which ones are not quite SLR quality.

[Top tip: If you're thinking it's these you're way off...]

5. The awesomeness of Katie and her dress up costumes. Sophia was obsessed with this firefighter getup. Hehe, kids are awesome.

6. The fact that this belly will soon no longer be.

7. Finally (perhaps I should have started with these as they have made me beam all week) Sophia's drawings. Every mother gets to brag about their child's brilliance right? Well, these 'dogs' are damn brilliant. :)

As are these 'trains'. Complete with track, steam and passengers.

Incase you hadn't guessed I am a rather proud mum. ;)

The two pics above are not amazing but a demonstration of how sharp our new camera is (with no flash) in the dimmest lighting ever. *contented sigh*

That's all for now. Hope your weeks have been full of smiles too.

bring on the beach

Just posting a couple of pics from our weekend. We headed off to Omaha for a little pre-baby relaxation. The first time we've stayed since Easter, and the last before our new addition. Sand ... beachy breeze ... warm spring sun ... wanders ... skylarks ... board games ... books ... crisp sheets and lazy coffee mornings PLUS Mum's cooking = bliss. We could have stayed for so much longer. Might have to next time...

We are warming up for summer and couldn't be more excited about DAYLIGHT SAVINGS! We've decided that we are going to truly make the most of the beach this year--take the full sunshade and picnic kit and spend hours soaking it up. A couple of strolls, sand castles and the odd swim won't cut it. We're going to go the full hog, baby and all, the way I remember doing when I was a kid. We were real kiwi beach babies: hours swimming, bodyboarding, building elaborate sand creations, tumbling down dunes, picnicing, spread out on beach towels devouring books, BBQs and late night bonfires. I miss it. (Not allowed the bonfires anymore but the BBQs will suffice if we stay long enough to watch the sun go down.)

A bunch of these photos are Mum's. Ie the ones with that beautiful shallow depth of field thing happening. Like these...

One of may favourite weekend moments was a walk Sophia and I took one evening. Slight drizzle and sun going down. We wandered through the dunes across the paths, through swarms of little midges that didn't bother us. Cool evening breeze and skylarks constantly singing and swooping over head. Just about perfect.

Wish I had taken my camera.

Mum snapped these, though, of Fia and her bud Austin. Austin, wanna come too?--a phrase much used by our little this weekend. :)

Ahh, how good is it to be a kiwi!?

these lyrics have been running through my head today...

just one look on your face

just one glance of your eyes

and my whole world is changed

my whole world is changed

So good.

here it is...

Phew. Quilt complete. And a bit of bunting to boot.

It's left me too tired to write much about it, but I'm so glad it's done and Sophia's room is looking more like a little girl's room than a mishmash of leftover baby things. Just a few more bits and pieces to do, but I'll potter away at them slowly over the next two weeks I think.

I have been inspired by both Tiff from Dottie Angel, and a post by my Seattleite friend Alisha (check out her blog, she's an amazing writer and an incredibly inspiring person all round, really) to create my goodies out of vintage fabrics--and also because they just look so cute. So I sourced some relatively inexpensive scrap pieces from Etsy.

As I mentioned in my last post, quilting something this big is not a quick and easy venture. Fun though, and thoroughly satisfying. I figure I will spare you a step by step tutorial on this one, given that there are so many quilting pros out there who have neater and more efficient methods than I to share. I'll just list a couple of tips for you--things I would or wouldn't do again (below).

And as for the bunting, I am a big fan of the itty bitty sort. There's a lot of it out there but here's my take on it.

I wanted to use up the scraps of leftover vintage fabric. I sewed them on to linen, and then on to wool. If they fray then it'll only complete the look. I like the rough look and the mismatched shapes and sizes. Would make a cute party garland as well.

I actually made a bit too much of this so I'll sell some of it in my Etsy shop soon. Will keep you posted.

As I have mentioned in past posts, I love the idea of using your kiddy's own art to decorate their room. I went with twine and mini pegs (you can grab little bags of them from Spotlight) and have displayed art, notes, photos etc. It's a living thing, we change the art over regularly. Sophia is so proud of her art wall and 'reflects' on her pieces with me daily. :)

So as for those quilting 'tips':

1. Check out this blog. Particulary her tutorials. Such as this one.

2. Either calculate how much fabric you need properly before you buy it (I still haven't learnt) or buy more than you think. There is a LOT of fabric in a quilt. I had hoped to use only vintage fabric in this one but ended up adding a whole lot more (of the Spotlight variety) in order to reverse it and increase the size to make it extra big and drapey.

3. Read the washing instructions before you wash the batting or it will practically fall to bits in the wash. (Oh dear, do I ever learn?)

4. Follow the advise of people like quilting pro Marie Barnaby (thank you Marie, if you are reading) who tell you to just use scissors and a ruler instead of wasting money on expensive fan dangle quilting tools.

5. Use safety pins to hold your quilting 'sandwich' together before you cut it and sew it.

6. Check out this youtube tutorial when it comes to sewing on the binding (if you are a novice like me). These are the sort of tips I need to add to my sewing repertoire instead of consistently winging it.

7.Take your time. Like knitting, I imagine the most enjoyable way to approach quilting is when you view it as a long term project. When you pick it up and piece away at it slowly.

8. Start a quilting bee. How fun would that be!? ;)

quilting delusion

Aaaah...sleeping child in the room next door. She will sleep--I will blog. (Cup of tea at hand.)

Don't have a lot to post about today except to say that I have been wondering what it is in me that makes me think I can easily take on a large sized quilt in a couple of days. Yes, I did honestly think it would be a breeze--sew a few squares together, how long could it take?

So in the wee hours of Saturday morning (I am talking wee hours) it began to dawn on me that I may have deluded myself a little. Needless to say, there is a LOT of cutting, sewing, arranging, piecing together, ironing, back stretching and cup of tea pouring involved in quilting.

So now I am wondering what it is in me that makes me, despite the effort of the night before, spontaneously decide to double the work load and make my quilt reversible? Two times as much work as I started with. Conclusion: I am officially a crazy pregnant woman. Yes, I am blaming it all on pregnancy and those incomprehensible nesting energies. :)

Here is the progress so far. (Found the perfect vintage fabric on Etsy--retro sheeting.)

Quilting is a little addictive, I have discovered, and I am enjoying myself despite the long haul. Like a puzzle, you can see it slowly forming into itself and you get that just one more piece thing going on.

Needless to say, we've been living in mess. It's inevitable when the sewing machine comes out.

And Sophia has been busying herself with crafting of her own...

...parking her cars in rows around the house and drawing pages and pages of 'cars' (love it!)...

...and a fun visit to Opa and Grandma's house where her Grandma took these beautiful snaps.

Believe it or not I have managed, quilting or no, to sort and wash out a few itty bitty stretch and grows. Weeeee--getting a little excited!

That's all for now. I am hoping I will be back in a couple of days with a few finished bits and pieces to share. :)

rainbows, gifts and fun

So, I'm not finished with the 'art kit' kiddie gift idea. Sophia's friend's birthdays all seem to fall around this time of year--I guess we're on a roll. Thus, I have two more to share.

I thought we'd make Sophia's little friend Abby a Craft Crate. I got a little crate for $8 at Farro and thought it would look cute filled with jars. Fortunately Mum's handy used jar box was full of old baby-food jars (great size for little bits and pieces) and I was inspired--after playing around with sand art a little and trying, unsuccessfully, to dye it with food colouring--to fill them with coloured salt. Sophia and I have since discovered that coloured salt is a super fun and vibrant alternative to glitter. I'll detail the process below, but it's quick and easy and Sophia practically made it herself.

So, we filled five little jars with brightly coloured 'art salt' and I covered the jar lids with pieces of scrap fabric (see craft jar post for details on how to do this). I grabbed a couple of extra jars, one for buttons, another for two little pottles of glitter, and in the third I put a bunch of paper doilies. I've been hankering to make things out of doilies for a while so watch this space for a few activities.

That's all! I figure once all the salt has been used the jars could be refilled with other crafty bits and pieces. And really you could stick anything you wanted to in them, for me it's all about the packaging, the idea and the hours fun to be had for the little recipient. See the next gift (below) or the craft jar post for alternative things you could fill the jars with.

For a card I spray glued a doily to brown paper, folded it in half and tied the gift together with string. Cute--want one for myself.

As for that coloured salt. I googled how to do it and found this tutorial. But Sophia practically explains it visually in the next few pics. Took a minute or so to make each colour and the process was an awesome toddler activity in itself.

We filled some jars up for ourselves and had fun making 'art' with it.

So then we got on this rainbow kick and since I included jelly in the kit below, I thought we'd make some rainbow jelly. Just for fun.

Since jars seem to be my thing at the moment we filled them with the jelly and invited Sophia's little friend Emma to share it with us. Now, I did include jelly in Ben's gift below with the intention of it being both a fun thing to make and potentially to smush and mash around a bit. Because why not, really? I didn't actually expect the girls to go there. I guess I expected more of our own jelly version of a tea party.

We were all quite civil to begin with.

But it didn't last long.

Conclusion: rainbow jelly is art. Yummy art. :)

As for Ben's gift, I wanted to go that get your hands in and get messy route. So I made this Things to Slush Mush and Mash kit.

I Mod Podged punched circles onto the box and used my stamps to write the label. Again, see the Craft Jar post for more details on this idea. (Mod Podge is great fyi, both a glue and a sealer so you can kind of paper mache and varnish all with a couple of coats from one bottle.)

I filled the box with the following: a tube of finger paint, a bottle of pva, some playdough, a sponge cut into shapes for stamping, a few collagy bits like cotton balls, a jar of sand, a can of shaving cream (will explain) and yes, a bag of jelly.

Just to make them all look nice and coordinated I Mod Podged circles onto the bottles and cans of pva and paint etc. And we covered the jar lids with Sophia's potato stamp print work.

And to finish it off I used the circles again as a gift tag.

So much fun to be had inside this little box. Sophia tested out the sponge stamping. Not as crisp as potato stamping, but fun none the less. And reusable, just wash out the sponges and store for next time. I would stick to plain shapes like squares, circles and triangles etc. We cut out some stars and little people and trees but you would never know it from the end result.

Loved it though, and Sophia is so proud of all her little master pieces.

As for that shaving cream, I read in a magazine somewhere (Littlies I think) that it can be great for 'shower art' on a rainy day. Finger paint away then wash it off with the shower hose. So...

Twas great!

Well, there are a couple more toddler gift ideas for you. And don't worry, the birthday parties are only just beginning so the theme's not over yet. ;)

Thought I'd end with a few super cute pics of little Miss Emma.

And a couple from today of those two little buds sitting on potties and giggling away together like little girties. Love it!

:)
